The abortion pill works in two separate steps. You’ll visit the doctor at some point in the first 11 weeks of your pregnancy where you will take the first pill. The pill you’ll take will block your body’s progesterone production so that the pregnancy stops growing. This pill is called mifepristone.
Then, you’ll schedule a second visit within 48 hours of your first. At the second visit, you’ll get the misoprostol pill, which can be taken at home or at the office. This pill causes dilation of your cervix, bleeding, and cramping in order to clear your uterus.
